CALD-ELDR express support for embattled Singaporean Oppositionist

(Seoul, Korea/ October 31, 2002) Asian and European Liberals and Democrats join hand in expressing concern over the arrest, conviction and detention of Dr. Chee Soon, Secretary General of the Singapore Democratic Party.

During its Executive Committee meeting in Seoul, Korea dated October 30, 2002, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) passed a resolution expressing concern over arrest and conviction of  Dr. Chee.

Soon Juan and Mr. Gandhi Ambalam and the continued detention of Dr. Chee and strongly urging the  Singaporean Government to reaffirm its commitment to the fundamental principles contained in the Constitution of Singapore and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to which Singapore is a signatory.  The resolution was supported  by  the European Liberal Democratic Reform (ELDR) Party Group.
