CALD ends its 5th Communications Workshop

(November 23, 2007/ Manila, Philippines)  The 5th CALD Communications Workshop, with the theme “Political Campaign Communications for Asian Liberal and Democratic Parties”, ends tonight. The 5-day workshop was hosted by the Liberal Party of the Philippines (LP) and supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF).The event formally opened with a welcome dinner held at the Crustasia Restaurant at the Podium in Ortigas. Guests from LP and FNF were present as this reception also served as a farewell for the outgoing CALD executive director, Mr. John Joseph S. Coronel.Mr. Coronel was honored with speeches from Mr. Siegfried Herzog, FNF resident representative; Hon. Butch Abad, former CALD chairman; Hon. Jules Maaten, former Liberal International secretary general and current member of the European Parliament and Hon. Franklin Drilon, CALD chairman and LP president.

The workshop started with a review of the objectives, setting of expectations and dividing of the participants into groups. Dr. Neric Acosta and Mr. Sammy Santos served as the facilitators while Ms. Deedee Espina was assigned as the rapporteur.

The workshop was honored with the presence of speakers like Ms. Yoly Ong of Campaigns and Gray, former Philippine Secretary of Education and CALD Chair Butch Abad, Sen. Antonio Trillanes’ Chief of Staff Rolando Averilla, and Genuine Opposition’s spokesperson Atty. Adel Tamano who all shared their experiences and expertise in conducting campaigns.

Case studies were also presented by the workshop participants who represented CALD member parties, associates and observers—the Democrat Party of Thailand, Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, Liberal Party of the Philippines, Liberal Party of Sri Lanka, Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia, Singapore Democratic Party, Nation Awakening Party of Indonesia, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle and Liberal Forum Pakistan.

After a successful morning evaluation meeting on the last day, participants went on an educational trip right outside of Manila. Participants had a traditional local lunch at the Balaw Balaw restaurant in Angono, Rizal. This was followed by a trip to see ancient petroglyphs at a nearby facility of the National Museum.

The workshop was officially concluded at the Cuillere restaurant at Serendra, Fort Bonifacio.
