(October 14, 2003/ Phnom Penh, Cambodia) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats, in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia, will be sponsoring the 2nd CALD Young Leaders Workshop on October 26 to 31, 2003 at the Juliana Hotel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The theme for this year is “The Youth in Democratic Transitions: Prospects for Young Liberals in Asia.”

The main objective of the program is for the participants to know and understand the role the youth plays in democratic transitions and their attitudes regarding (party) politics thereafter. The other objectives of the workshop are (1) to promote the creation of a liberal youth network in the region; (2) to underscore the role of youth wings in CALD member and observer parties and organisations; (3) to promote the values of liberal democracy within the youth movements of Asian liberal political parties.

During the 1st Young Leaders Workshop in the Philippines last year, the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia or YLDA was formed. CALD expects to expand the YLDA membership during this workshop. An YLDA General Assembly will also be held.

Participants will come from liberal and democratic political parties and think tanks in Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Burma, Taiwan, Indonesia, Korea, India, Nepal and Pakistan as well as European representatives from the International Federation of Liberal Youths. Many of the participants themselves will present case studies on the role young people played in democratic transitions in their respective countries. The workshop is keynoted by HE Sam Rainsy, leader of the national opposition of Cambodia with Mr. John Joseph S. Coronel, CALD Executive Director and Dr. Ronald Meinardus, FNF Manila Resident Representative as facilitators
