CALD hosts dinner for SRP and AIPCM

(April 7, 2005/ Manila) After the successful press conferences of eminent Cambodian oppositionist, Sam Rainsy, and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Caucus on Myanmar (AIPCM) during the 112th Inter-parliamentary Union General Assembly, Mr. John Joseph S. Coronel, Executive Director of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), hosted this evening a dinner in honor of the Sam Rainsy Party and the AIPCM at the joint offices of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and CALD.

This also marked the occasion of the first visit of Mr. Sam Rainsy, MP, and Senator Ung Bun Ang to the CALD secretariat. Messrs. Sam and Ung were CALD Chairman and Secretary General, respectively, from 2000 to 2002 when the Manila-based CALD secretariat was in another location. Other members of the Sam Rainsy Party were Ms. Tioulong Saumura, MP, and former Cambodian Minister of Women and Veterans Affairs, Madam Mu Sochua.

Representing AIPCM were Dr. Tint Swe, Minister in exile of the National Council of the Union of Burma, Ms. Teresa Kuok, MP, of Malaysia and Ms. Camilla Buzzi, Project Coordinator of the Oslo-based PD Burma (The International Network of Political Leaders Promoting Democracy in Burma).

Among those who attended the  dinner were Education Undersecretary Jose Martin Luis Gascon of the Liberal Party of the Philippines; well-known television anchor Ricky Carandang who interviewed Sam Rainsy in his news program earlier today; and, Mr. Samuel Santos, Director of the Senate Print Media Services. Mr. Santos organized and emceed the press conference of Mr. Sam Rainsy. Coincidentally, Mr. Santos was a participant in the 2nd CALD Communication Workshop in Phnom Penh last year. This workshop, focusing on electoral campaigns, was hosted by the Sam Rainsy Party.
