CALD Witnesses One of the World’s Biggest Electoral Exercise

Last 8-11 July 2014, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) held an observation mission in Jakarta, Indonesia to witness the country’s third direct presidential elections.  Since the ouster of the dictator Soeharto in 1998, Southeast Asia’s largest state (and biggest economy) has made significant strides in consolidating its democracy, making it a model for the rest of the region.

Suu Kyi Meets Ambassadors from U.S, Britain and Australia

Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi received U.S. Ambassador Derek J. Mitchell, British Ambassador Andrew Patrick and Australian Ambassador Bronte Moules on July 14 in the capital Nay Pyi Taw.

CAMBODIA

Clashes Erupt Between Cambodian Opposition, Security Forces

Clashes between security forces and Cambodian opposition supporters in Phnom Penh have left nearly 60 people injured.
The violence occurred early Tuesday when Mu Sochua, an elected member of parliament from the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, led hundreds of supporters to Freedom Park, which has been closed to rallies since January.

INDONESIA

Most Indonesians Living in Singapore voted for Joko Widodo, Official Results Show

Indonesian presidential frontrunner Joko Widodo garnered four times as many votes than his contender Prabowo Subianto did from Indonesians living in Singapore, official results have shown.

Mr Joko of the Indonesian Democratic Party – Struggle (PDI-P) had 79.25 per cent of the votes, while Mr Prabowo of the Gerindra party, had slightly more than 20 per cent, according to the manual count done by Indonesian overseas election committee at the embassy on Monday.

Jokowi Responds Positively to Possible Golkar Coalition

Presidential candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said that he would be glad if the Golkar Party decided to switch teams and support the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla ticket.
“Yes, that would be good, it means that we can work together,” Jokowi told reporters in Bandung, West Java on Saturday, as reported by tempo.co.

Hundreds Attend Protest Against CPF and Medishield Life Policies

Hundreds of people gathered at a rally to protest Central Provident Fund(CPF) and MediShield Life policies at Hong Lim Park on Saturday afternoon.
There were eight speakers in all: former presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian, social activist Vincent Wijeysingha bloggers Leong Sze Hian, Ariffin Sha, Han Hui Hui and Roy Ngerng, Reform Party chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam and Singapore Democratic Party treasurer Chong Wai Fung.

TAIWAN


DPP Programs Aim to Involve Youth In Politics

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday announced two youth-oriented programs aimed at encouraging the young to participate in politics, which it says is crucial to deepening Taiwan’s democracy and reforming the party.

The first program, Youth Power, encourages people aged 23 to 40 to participate in the November elections for township councilors and borough and village wardens.
