Aquino Receives Freedom Medal in Germany

President Aquino received the medal for his successful reforms in the areas of education, anti-corruption and rule of law. Dr. Wolfgang Gerhardt, chairman of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), said that Filipinos serve as an inspiration worldwide. “You are the embodiment and the instigator of this inspiration. Your straight path, the daang matuwid, is our motivation too,” he told President Aquino. Dr. Gerhardt listed Aquino’s achievements, including in the area of reproductive health, human rights, foreign investments and economic growth, education, human rights, the Bangsamoro peace, sticking to international law in the dispute with China and in particular in fighting corruption. The Foundation for Freedom has worked together with liberal partners in the Philippines since 1986.

Suu Kyi Reiterates Call for National Reconciliation

National League for Democracy (NLD) Chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi has called on the ethnic minority peoples of Burma to keep alive the spirit of national reconciliation.
Speaking in Naypyidaw on Thursday to NLD members who had travelled in from Karen State, she said, “I would like to urge you to keep alive the spirit of national reconciliation, which brings about mutual understanding and mutual respect, and allows us to help each other, whether it be among our own ethnic people or among all [Burmese] citizens – all the people of the union, regardless of race, religion, language or place of birth.”

Establishing Democracy a Challenge, Says NLD Leader

Establishing a culture of democracy in Myanmar will be challenging and time-consuming, opposition party leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said in Nay Pyi Taw on September 15.
“We cannot say that we have had four years of democracy; we can only say we have had four years of striving towards democracy,” the leader of the National League for Democracy.

Hong Kong Lecturers in Show Support For Striking Students

Leading academics in Hong Kong have come out in strong support of a student boycott of classes planned for next week as part of an ongoing pro-democracy campaign in the former British colony.
The move comes as Hong Kong universities held their opening assemblies on Tuesday, with large numbers of students wearing yellow ribbons in support of the democracy movement, and others holding banners calling on students to boycott class next week.

INDONESIA

RI Ratifies Haze Treaty

Indonesia has officially adopted a decade-old regional haze treaty following pressure from neighboring countries over forest fires on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan.
A House of Representatives’ plenary meeting on Tuesday endorsed the ratification of the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, which obliges Indonesia, as one of the member states, to actively involve itself in efforts to mitigate air pollution, both nationally and through intensified regional and international cooperation.

PNOY Awarded Freedom Medal in Germany for ‘Successful Reforms’

President Benigno Aquino III was presented the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Freedom Medal in Berlin on Saturday during his official visit to Europe and the United States.

According to a news release from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), Aquino received the medal for “his successful reforms in the areas of education, anti-corruption and rule of law.”

President’s Official Visits, September 2014
September 18 2014

This September, President Benigno S. Aquino III will undertake official visits to Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, and the United States (Boston and New York).
The European leg of the visits will begin on September 13, 2014, when the President departs for Madrid, Spain. The American leg of the trip will begin on September 20, 2014, when the President arrives in Boston from Berlin. The visits will conclude when the President comes home on September 24, 2014.
