Arakan League for Democracy (ALD) Chairman Aye Thar Aung slammed the Union Election Commission (UEC), saying it was “sowing confusion” among political parties by axing the by-elections, which were slated for November or December.

HONG KONG – Hong Kong pro-democracy activists admitted Tuesday, September 2, they are powerless to overturn Beijing’s refusal to grant them full voting rights, but the United States threw its weight behind the protesters, courting China’s wrath.
Activist leaders had promised a new “era of civil disobedience” after Beijing crushed hopes for full democracy on Sunday, August 31, ruling that only pre-vetted candidates will be able to run for leadership of the semi-autonomous city in 2017.

From Taiwan, Broad Support for Democracy in Hong Kong
September 4 2014

Taiwan’s main political parties say they support Hong Kong residents’ calls for a greater say in choosing their leader following Beijing’s decision to limit electoral reforms in the semiautonomous Chinese city.
Self-ruled Taiwan, regarded by China as a part of its territory with which it must eventually be united, is often characterized by deeply fractious politics, with the leading camps split between those who lean toward unification and those who favor independence. But the similar responses to this issue on both sides suggest that China’s Hong Kong policies have undermined its overtures toward Taiwan.
