October 1 2014The Youth Council for Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD Youth) convened in Mongolia last 19-22 September 2014 for the Climate Change Communication Seminar and Climate Change Youth Camp.  Hosted by the CALD chair-party Civil Will Green Party (CWGP), the joint events hoped to promote climate change awareness and encourage appropriate climate change response among the participants.  More specifically, the seminar tackled the use of new media and social media to promote climate change awareness among the youth, while the youth camp served as an experiential and hands-on activity for leadership capacity-building on climate change.

CALD Statement No. 3 S. 2014
CALD Expresses Alarm on Crack down of Protesters in Hong Kong
September 30 2014

The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) is extremely concerned about the recent crackdown on protesters at the heart of Hong Kong’s business district. The week-long protest organized by students and activists has been calling for universal suffrage and a democratic reform of Hong Kong’s electoral system. The government, as represented by Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung, said that “the demonstration was illegal and elections would go ahead as planned”. China also signaled strong support to this stance of the Hong Kong government and condemned the protests as illegal and disruptive.

INDONESIA

Democratic Party in Spotlight over Walkout Plot
September 29 2014

Despite President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s public statement of regret that the House of Representatives has put an end to the direct elections of local leaders, the public is growing sceptical of his true intentions as more details emerge that indicate the Democratic Party may have engineered the move.
Yudhoyono posted a statement on YouTube over the weekend, saying he was disappointed with the House’s decision to pass the law and reiterating his support for direct regional elections.

September 27 2014

Outraged Indonesians are now up in arms and finally mobilizing after waking up on Friday, September 26, to find out they had lost their right to directly choose their mayors and governors.
While a survey earlier in September showed more than 80% of Indonesians were against the Regional Elections Bill (RUU Pilkada) – which will have local leaders be chosen by local legislatures – protests against it were limited to sparsely attended rallies and online petitions (the main one got less than 60,000 signatures).

House Passes Regional Election Bill, Scraps Direct Voting

It was billed as a scrap that would go down to the wire, a vote to determine Indonesia’s democratic credentials.
In the end, it wasn’t even close.
The House of Representatives voted in the early hours of Friday 226-135 in favor of passing a bill that takes away people’s right to vote for mayors, district heads and governors, and gives it instead to regional legislatures.
