CALD Returns to Haiyan-Devastated Areas

The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) returned to Haiyan-devastated areas in Eastern Visayas, Philippines on 2-4 May 2014.  With participants from Cambodia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mongolia and the Philippines, the observation trip was organized as part of CALD’s continuing effort to provide assistance to typhoon victims and to promote greater awareness of climate change impacts.

Before a crowd of over a thousand local runners who joined the Freedom Run in Palo, Leyte on Saturday morning, Vice Mayor Bolingling Reposar said, “Super typhoon Yolanda took not only our livelihood and all we had, but also the precious lives of our loved ones. Yet the faith, hope and dreams of every Leyteño never vanished. We rise again and continue to dream.”

CNRP Holds a Citywide Rolling Rally

Days after authorities repeatedly cracked down on demonstrations, opposition party supporters staged a rolling rally across Phnom Penh yesterday, filling up roads for hours and blocking major intersections.
About 500 people with tuk-tuks and motorbikes gathered at the Cambodia National Rescue Party headquarters in the capital’s Meanchey district in the afternoon before taking to their vehicles, from which they blasted the party’s anthem and shouted slogans over megaphones. Thousands of CNRP supporters also marched in Kampong Cham province earlier in the day.

PDI-P, Gerindra top Jakarta Legislative Election
April 29 2014

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has won the highest number of votes in the legislative election for Jakarta Legislative Council, securing more than 1.2 million votes, followed by the Gerindra Party with nearly 600,000 votes.

Obama ends 2-day Philippine Visit

US President Barack Obama ended his week-long Asian tour here after a two-day state visit intended to “reaffirm” his country’s “enduring alliance” with the Philippines.
Obama was given departure honors at AGES Aviation Center, Balagbag Ramp in Pasay City, where he was sent off by Philippine officials led by Vice President Jejomar Binay.

DPP Chair Su Tseng-chag: Construction on the 4th nuclear power plant cannot continue

DPP Chair Su Tseng-chang today expressed his great relief at the news that former DPP chair Lin Yi-hsiung had ended his hunger strike against the construction of the 4th Nuclear Power Plant.  Speaking after a meeting of the DPP Central Standing Committee, Su said: “A man of Lin age’s age going on a hunger strike for his ideals is deserving of the utmost respect.  He has already sacrificed too much for Taiwan,” adding that he hoped Lin would take care of his health.
