NLD Silent on Petition Campaign Expenses
August 19 2014The National League for Democracy says it is unable to reveal the cost of its campaign to amend section 436 of the constitution or its sources of funding because no records were kept.
A petition launched as part of the campaign concluded on July 19 with almost 5 million signatures, and activities in support of the campaign have been held in 308 of Myanmar’s 330 townships by the NLD and the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society.

Cambodian Rights Group Pushes for Family Visits for CNRP Detainees
August 22 2014A human rights group has called on Cambodian authorities to allow the families of three detained opposition youth leaders to visit them in prison, saying denial of family visits during their detention since Aug. 2 was politically motivated and a violation of basic rights.Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) youth leaders Khin Chamreun, Neang Sokhun, and San Kinheng have been held pending trial on insurrection charges for alleged involvement in a July 15 protest by party supporters pushing for the reopening of Freedom Park in the capital Phnom Penh.

PM Promises to Keep Deal

The National Assembly will hold a session next Tuesday to elect internal leadership positions according to an agreement made by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party and opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party on July 22 that saw the CNRP join the assembly, Prime Minister Hun Sen said yesterday.

Cambodia’s Parliament Leadership Reshuffle set for next week: PM

The 123 Cambodian Members of Parliament (MPs) from the ruling and opposition parties will vote on Tuesday next week to elect their leadership, Prime Minister Hun Sen, vice president of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), said on Monday.

The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP)’s 55 MPs ended their 10-month long boycott of parliament early this month after Hun Sen and CNRP’s President Sam Rainsy reached an agreement to end their differences over last year’s election that saw the ruling party won 68 seats.

CNRP To Probe Organ Claims

The opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party plans to launch an investigation into organ trafficking in Cambodia following the mysterious case of an alleged kidney ring operating out of a military hospital in Phnom Penh.
Mu Sochua, a CNRP lawmaker and head of the newly formed National Assembly commission on health care, told the Post yesterday that the party will probe claims of organ trafficking.

Sam Rainsy Assures Supporters of Opposition’s Dedication

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy told supporters Friday that the goal of his party remains the same: to change the current regime.
The president of the Cambodia National Rescue Party has worked to assure his supporters that the party is working for change, following a political deal last month that ended an opposition boycott and put 55 Rescue Party lawmakers in the National Assembly.

August 18 2014President-elect Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said on Wednesday that ministerial seats in his upcoming Cabinet were open to anyone, including members of political parties outside his coalition.

The Jakarta Governor emphasized that the most important consideration for ministerial candidates was professionalism and competence, not the parties they were affiliated with.

Gerakan to limit Leaders’ Tenures
August 18 2014GERAKAN will amend its constitution to limit the terms of the party president and state chairmen to three terms.Its president, Datuk Mah Siew Keong, said the proposed amendment would be tabled during the party’s annual general assembly on Oct 26.

“A study found 70 per cent of members are agreeable to limiting the term of party president and state chairmen.”
