Asian and European Liberals Meet in Brussels

The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Group convened in the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium for the 7^th ALDE-CALD.

Liberal Party candidate Camarines Sur Rep. Ma. Lenor “Leni” Robredo is the country’s vice president.

In his capacity as ALDE Party (LI cooperating organisation) President, LI President of Honour Hans van Baalen MEP welcomed a large delegation from liberal parties in Asia to the European Parliament last week, as the 7th ALDE-CALD meeting convened with the aim of strengthening relations between liberals from the global East and West. The biennial meeting, which offers a forum for political engagement between two of LI’s regional organisations, was organised with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty (LI Cooperating Organisation).

Vice President-elect Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo on Monday said she understands if President elect Rodrigo Duterte is having a difficult time thinking if he would give her a Cabinet position in the incoming administration.

The United Nations on Sunday voiced alarm at the escalating political tensions in Cambodia, including attempted arrests of politicians, amid allegations from the opposition that Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling party is persecuting it.

Two weeks ago, I was invited by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe Party (ALÐE) and the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) to attend the bi-annual ALDE-CALD Summit.

“As all public officials will take oath to uphold the Constitution, we will hold that President-elect Duterte will stand for human rights,” CHR Chair Chito Gascon said on Tuesday.
