Pro-democracy veteran Martin Lee warns joint checkpoint deal sets precedent for crushing protests

Pro-democracy veteran Martin Lee has warned that China could lease more land from Hong Kong in order to crush protests in the city, following the precedent set by the joint checkpoint arrangement for the Express Rail Link terminus.

A panel of judges in Taiwan electrified much of Asia in May by declaring that bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional. The judges told lawmakers to scrap the ban that’s in effect now for lack of laws saying same-sex marriage is legal. People in the vibrant Taiwanese LGBT community cheered that ruling because same-sex marriages would give them the rights as equal to male-female couples to make parenting decisions, share insurance benefits and just tell the world hey, we’re hitched.
