CALD participates in FNF’s Networking for Freedom

(November 9, 2006/ Marrakech, Morocco) Several officials and members of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) participated in the Networking for Freedom, a workshop on the challenges and chances of regional party alliances sponsored by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF). This was held on November 9 and 10 at the Ryad Mogador Hotel in Marrakech, Morocco.

Aside from CALD, the participating liberal regional alliances include the African Liberal Network (ALN), the Red Liberal de America Latina (RELIAL), the Alliance of Liberals in the Middle East and North Africa (ALMENA) and the Eastern European group.

Speakers from CALD include CALD and Liberal Party of the Philippines Secretary General, Dr. Neric Acosta; Madam Saumura Tioulong, MP, of the Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia; Ms. Chee Siok Chin of the Singapore Democratic Party; and, Dr. Rajiva Wijesinha. Other CALD participants are Malaysian Senator, Dr. S. Vijayaratnam; Thailand’s Dr. Buranaj Smuthraks, a former parliamentarian from the Democrat Party; Mr. Soe Aung of the National Council of the Union of Burma; and, CALD Program Officers Brian Gonzales and Paolo Zamora.

Prior to the workshop, a luncheon reception was hosted by FNF Chairman, Dr. Wolfgang Gerhardt, MP. Liberal International President John Lord Alderice gave the closing remarks.
