(Bali, Indonesia/August 29, 2002) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation sent a thirteen-person delegation to the ASEAN Peoples Assembly at the Hotel Sanur Beach in Bali.

The three-day conference was attended by about three hundred participants from the ten Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member-nations and other countries worldwide.  The ASEAN Institutes of Strategic Studies and the other sponsoring institutes behind APA hope to bridge the gap between government and civil society towards constructive dialogues on various social, political and economic issues.  APA envisages a Southeast Asian community of nations that is outward looking, peaceful, politically stable, economically prosperous and bound together in partnership in dynamic development, thus forming a community of caring societies.

APA 2002 was keynoted by CALD Chairperson Sukhumbhand Pariabatra  MP. A consultative meeting was held by the CALD Execom in order to discuss various activities including the CALD 2003 Conference scheduled for May next year in Colombo, Sri Lanka focusing on wealth creation and sustainable development
