(May 17, 2007/ Bled, Slovenia) CALD Program Officer, Carlo Religioso, arrived today in the Slovenian resort town of Bled to attend the 9th Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE), a joint venture of the World Bank and Slovenian government.

He received a support grant from the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Slovenia to attend the 9th ABCDE.

This annual program, which started in 1998, is co-organized by the Paris-based World Bank.  This year’s theme: “Private Sector and Development”, includes plenary sessions on financial inclusions, investment climate, and the provision of the public services by non-state actors. The event, which was held last year in Tokyo, Japan, attracted about 400 participants from over 90 countries, representing the academia, civil society, the private sector and policy makers.

Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa and his Minister of Finance Andrej Bajuk and World Bank’s Senior Vice President Francois Bourgugnon were the major speakers during the opening ceremony.

Mr. Religioso is the second CALD Program Officer to attend an ABCDE event after Mr. Brian Gonzales in 2005.
