CALD Resolution No. 1 S. 2004

A resolution thanking the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan and Liberal International for hosting and co-sponsoring the Liberal International Asia Conference

Aware that Liberal International (LI) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), and Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) are sponsoring the Liberal International Asia Conference in Kaohsiung, Taiwan from March 4 to 6, 2004 with the theme “Democratic Consolidation and the Role of Political Parties”;

Acknowledging that this is the 2nd LI conference hosted by the DPP, the first one on February, 2000 in Taipei prior to the presidential elections;

Noting that the DPP is hosting this event on the eve of its presidential elections where Their Excellencies President Chen Shui-bian and Annette Lu will be seeking a fresh mandate that will enable them to pursue the reforms they have initiated since 2000;

Recognizing that the Liberal International Asia Conference 2004 is an opportunity for eminent liberals worldwide to examine Taiwan’s challenging transition from authoritarianism to democracy; and to share experiences and recommend best practices for the further the advancement of democracy in the different regions of the world;

Emphasizing that the wholehearted and unconditional support given to DPP by liberals from Asia and outside the continent is a vindication of DPP’s unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom and democracy, good governance, economic development and social justice and human rights; and of DPP’s impressive performance during its first four years in power;

The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats hereby thank the Democratic Progressive Party and Liberal International for hosting and co-sponsoring the Liberal International Asia Conference.
