CALD Resolution No. 1 S. 2010

CALD Resolution condemning the attack of the Democrat Party headquarters in Bangkok; calling for the just, peaceful and immediate resolution of the ongoing political unrest in Bangkok; supporting the legitimate government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva; and manifesting its trust in the DP-led government of Thailand to resolve the political crisis while adhering to the principles of democracy and the rule of law

Appalled that a grenade was hurled at the headquarters of the Democrat Party (DP) in Bangkok last April 6, 2010 and that the blast injured two policemen guarding the area;

Noting that the attack was made during the 64th foundation anniversary of DP, Thailand’s oldest political party, which has played a crucial role in the Southeast Asian Kingdom’s recent history and has been a positive force in nurturing democracy and in bringing about political stability in Thailand;

Noting further that the attack was made at the height of the pro-Thaksin Red Shirt rallies that had inconvenienced a great number of Bangkok residents, contributed to the country’s political tensions and proved costly to the Thai economy;

Cognisant that the attack was made to provoke the government to use force against the Red Shirt protesters;

Concerned that the attack was made at the very hour that an international delegation of liberals from LI and CALD was supposed to visit DP officials at the said HQ;

Saddened that the welfare of a greater majority of Thai population and the safety and security of Bangkok citizens are being sacrificed because of the political opportunism and pecuniary interests of one man who has been convicted of wide scale corruption and is considered responsible for violent attacks against Muslims in Southern Thailand;

Believing that political parties are indispensible institutions in a free and democratic nation;

Aware that political parties as institutions have been targets of authoritarian regimes and anti-democratic forces and even a political party in power can fall victim to destabilization schemes;

The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) hereby condemns the attack of the Democrat Party headquarters in Bangkok; calls for the just, peaceful and immediate resolution of the ongoing political unrest in Bangkok; supports the legitimate government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva; and manifests its trust in the DP-led government of Thailand to resolve the political crisis while adhering to the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

For the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats
