Aware that the Philippines successfully conducted its first automated elections, a historical milestone as the country was the first one in Southeast Asia to carry out a shift from manual to automated polls on a nationwide scale;

Lauding the electoral victory of the national and local candidates of the Liberal Party of the Philippines, some of whom served as officials of CALD, or as regular participants in CALD events:

Former CALD Secretary General and LP Vice Chairman Benigno Simeon Aquino III for winning the Philippine Presidency by landslide;

Former CALD Chair and LP Chairman Franklin Drilon for winning a seat in the Philippine Senate, where he served before as Senate President;

Former CALD Chair Raul Daza for winning a seat in the Philippine House of Representatives, representing the first district of the Province of Northern Samar;

Former CALD Women’s Caucus Chair Henedina Abad for winning a seat in the Philippine House of Representatives, representing the lone district of the Province of Batanes;

LP Secretary General Joseph Emilio Abaya for his re-election as Member of the Philippine House of Representatives, representing the first district of the Province of Cavite;

Former CALD Chair and LP Campaign Manager Florencio Abad and CALD Execom Member and LP Director General Jose Luis Martin Gascon for planning and launching the party’s inspiring national and local campaigns;

Acknowledging the strong showing of LP President Manuel Roxas II and CALD Secretary General J.R. Nereus Acosta in the vice-presidential and senatorial races, respectively;

Recognizing that LP’s achievements rest on the party’s grand tradition and its platform of governance which consistently emphasize freedom and democracy; equality of opportunities, education for all and access to social services; transparency, accountability and the freedom of information; and social justice, human rights and the rule of law;

Taking cognizance of the fact that the successful conduct of Philippine election, as well as LP’s victory in this generally free, fair and honest electoral exercise, are triumphs of democracy not only in the Philippines but in the broader Asian region;

Expressing its trust in the incoming Aquino administration’s commitment to a transformational leadership that punishes corruption and addresses poverty in order to lay the groundwork for political reforms and genuine social change in the Philippines;

The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) hereby congratulates the Liberal Party (LP) of the Philippines for its victory in the recent Philippine national and local elections; wishes President-elect Benigno Simeon Aquino III and other incoming government officials from LP success as they assume their respective posts and fulfil their commitments to the Filipino people; and expresses its trust in the incoming Aquino administration’s commitment to lay the groundwork for political reforms and genuine social change in the Philippines.
