CALD Secretary General presents CALD position on Burma

(February 28, 2006 / Manila, Philippines) Dr. J.R. Nereus Acosta, CALD Secretary General and Vice Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives of the Philippines, presented today the position of CALD in relation to two House Resolutions pertaining to Burma’s democratization efforts, House Resolutions 996 & 1040: “Calling on the inclusion of Myanmar in the agenda of the United Nations Security Council and a Privilege speech on the worsening situation in Myanmar” by Party-list Representative Mario “Mayong” Aguja.

Rep. Acosta stressed the role of CALD in assisting a member organization, the National Council of the Union of Burma, in cooperating with decision makers and parliamentarians for democratic initiatives in Burma. He adds that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy is a member of the NCUB, which CALD regularly engages in international dialogue lobbying efforts for democracy.

The meeting was hosted by the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives and chaired by Rep. Antonio Cuenco of the Province of Cebu. Rep. Acosta was accompanied by CALD staff members Brian V. Gonzales and Matthew Sherwin.
