(September 15, 2007/ Phnom Penh) In a resolution dated today, the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) urged the Sri Lankan Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to return to the negotiation table under the auspices of Ceasefire Facilitators and Co-Chairs, and to cease from attacking economic targets.

The LTTE withdrew twice from the peace talks since 2006. Hostilities in Sri Lanka have resumed resulting to the suffering of the people including the displacement of civilian populations in the Eastern Province.

The same resolution also requested the Sri Lankan government to refrain from initiating military action while recognizing its right to take defensive measures. It also welcomed the efforts at rehabilitation and reconstruction, in which the international community should cooperate with the Sri Lankan government while giving due attention to the protection of human rights.

In particular the International Committee of the Red Cross was cited for responding positively to the Sri Lankan government’s request for road transport and ensuring the cooperation of the LTTE. The resolution hoped that similar measures be taken to facilitate transport of people and goods by sea.

The resolution urged the international community to stand steadfast against any forced conscription, and to protect all families, and in particular, put a halt to the recruitment of children in warfare.
