(April 18, 2005/ Brussels) The two CALD interns to the European Parliament, Mr. Charles Tan of the Singapore Democratic Party and Ms. Yeam Hui Nih, of the Malaysian People’s Movement Party, meet today in Brussels, Belgium.

Mr. Tan, who began his internship last March 29 will be winding up his internship on April 22. Ms. Yeam starts today her internship period and will end on May 14. To take advantage of the overlapping period of internship, Mr. Tan will be sharing his experiences and give some advise to Ms. Yeam. The internship is hosted by the Alliance of Liberals & Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Brussels.

“The internship is an educational and mind opening experience. I hope this program continues. I would like to express my heartfelt  appreciation and gratitude to the organisers and the ALDE staff; especially Karin, Marica, Elke and Airis who have made my stay more
enjoyable,” Mr. Tan reported.

“I have learnt how the European Parliament works; especially within the committees, within the groups; and how the speakers debate on issues. Through the various meetings and hearings, I learnt more about the human rights situation in certain parts of Europe such as the discrimination that the ethnic minority that Roma people faces; and the political killings in Syria.”
