Former CALD Chairperson and current Secretary General of Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Dr. Chee Soon Juan, was chosen as the recipient of 2011 Liberal International (LI) Prize for Freedom.

The award was given by the LI Executive Committee, which recently convened in Manila, Philippines on 17 June 2011 in conjunction with the 57th LI Congress. The Prize for Freedom is LI’s way of recognizing an individual’s outstanding contribution to advancing human rights and political freedoms.

With this award, Dr. Chee joins the eminent roster of CALD personalities who previouly received the Prize namely Corazon Aquino (1987), Aung San Suu Kyi (1995), Martin Lee (1996), Chen Shui-bian (2001) and Sam Rainsy (2006).

In a resolution adopted by the CALD Executive Committee on 20 June 2011, it was noted that “the award attests to (Dr. Chee’s) contributions to making Singapore a freer and more democratic country; and wishes that this award would further strengthen his and SDP’s resolve to fight for the cause of democracy, freedom, human rights and social justice in Singapore.”

Hon. Hans van Baalen, MEP, LI President, will lead the 2011 LI Prize for Freedom awarding ceremonies in the latter part of this year.
