Media in Campaigns Workshop held in Phnom Penh

(September 11, 2004/ Phnom Penh, Cambodia)The 2nd CALD Communication workshop focusing on the theme “Media in Electoral Campaigns” was held from September 7 to 11, 2004 at the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. The project was hosted by the Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia, with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.

The workshop sought to review CALD’s existing communication practices;  review and update CALD communication strategies; assess and document the role of the media in electoral campaigns in pertinent Asian countries; lay the groundwork for a CALD publication on media and electoral campaigns; and present best practices regarding the usage of the media in electoral campaigns. The workshop was designed to create interaction of media practitioners from different member and observer parties of CALD and thereby enhance media campaign managing skills of all the participants.

Participants included communications and media relations officers as well as campaign managers from CALD member and observer parties in Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Burma, Korea, Indonesia and Pakistan. The workshop was facilitated by FNF Manila’s Dr. Ronald Meinardus, assisted by CALD Executive Director, John Joseph Coronel.

Sam Rainsy, leader of  the kingdom’s national opposition and  former chair of CALD, and other eminent figures like CALD Executive Committee member Son Chhay, MP, spoke on the current political situation in Cambodia.

Prof. Malou Tiquia presented the case study of the “Mr. Palengke” media campaign of Liberal Party’s Manuel A. Roxas who topped the latest senatorial elections.  Ms. Tiquia, president of the political consultancy firm PUBLICUS, was Senator’s Roxas’s campaign manager. LP was represented by Samuel Santos, Director of Media Services of the Philippine Senate.
