NDI’s Director for Political Parties visits Manila

(January 26, 2006 / Manila) Mr. Ivan Doherty, Senior Associate and Director of Political Party Programs of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) arrived in Manila today.

The Executive Director of the CALD, Mr. John Joseph S. Coronel, hosted a small meeting for Mr. Doherty at a cafe in Intramuros, the historic walled city within the Philippine capital. NDI is a Washington, DC based organization that promotes democracy worldwide. NDI is a partner of CALD.

Among those attending the meeting were former Undersecretary of Education Jose Luis Gascon of the Liberal Party of the Philippines and Mr. Telibert Laoc, incoming Country Representative of NDI’s office in Dili, East Timor and former Executive Director of the Philippine election watchdog, NAMFREL. Messrs. Gascon and Laoc have been delegates and speakers to various NDI-CALD joint ventures in Bangkok, Manila, Taipei and Jakarta.

CALD and NDI held several major projects together, including the political party reform workshops in2002 and 2003 in Bangkok and the electoral missions covering four countries in 2004.

Mr. Coronel and Mr. Doherty both expressed keen interest in having further cooperation between their two respective organizations. Mr. Doherty will return to Manila for the Liberal International Executive Committee Meeting in June, which will be held in conjunction of the 3rd meeting of CALD and theAlliance for Liberals & Democrats for Europe or ALDE.
