President Chen congratulates Alderdice et. al.

(June 2, 2005/ Taipei) H.E. Chen Shui-bian, President of Taiwan and Chairman of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats, congratulated the new leadership of Liberal International headed by its President, Lord John Alderdice of the British Liberal Democrats.

In his letter to Lord Alderdice, President Chen stated that “We believe that under your inspired and competent leadership, Liberal International will further develop as a significant international organization committed to the safeguarding of free, fair and open societies. Leadership with vision is especially needed now as we face the challenges of these critical times within and among nations.

“We appreciate your continued interest in our organization and we look forward to working closely with you and Liberal International as we have done so during the past several years. LI and CALD are bound by the common principles of democracy, liberty, equality, justice and human rights and international solidarity. Together, we can further pursue our common agenda of action based on these strongly shared beliefs and commitments.”

The other members of the LI Bureau elected during the 53rd LI Congress in Sofia, Bulgaria last month are Dr Wolfgang Gerhardt, Parliamentary Leader of the German Liberals; Matyas Eorsi, Leader of the Liberals in the Council of Europe; Hans van Baalen, Shadow Foreign Affairs Spokesman in the Dutch Parliament; Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Didier Reynders; Andorran Foreign Minister Juli Minoves Triquell; and Taiwanese MP, Ms Bi-Khim Hsiao who is also the current CALD Secretary General.
