SRP holds congress, CALD Sec Gen gives message of support

(September 9, 2007/ Phnom Penh) The Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia held its national congress from September 8 to 9 at the SRP Headquarters in the Cambodian capital.

The events in the congress included the selection of national party leaders, the presentation of party platform, an update on [arty expansion, an overview of the legislation proposed to the National Assembly, and talks by party leaders and international guests.  Among the international guest speaker was Dr. J.R. Nereus Acosta, former member of the Philippine parliament, and CALD Secretary General.  Dr. Acosta relayed the message of support in behalf of CALD and his own party, the Liberal Party.

The congress was the culmination of months of intra-party elections held nationwide from the commune to the provincial levels. Hon. Sam Rainsy, CALD Chairman from 2001 to 2002, was re-elected president of the party while Hon. Eng Chhay Eng, MP, was elected as SRP Secretary General. Active CALD members Hon. Yim Sovann, MP and Madam Mu Sochua, were elected as Treasurer and Deputy Secretary General, respectively.
