Taiwanese Vice President opens 2005 CALD General Assembly

(October 13, 2005/ Taipei, Taiwan) The Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) opens today with a formal dinner reception the 2005 General Assembly focusing on the theme Advancing Women in Politics: The Role of Political Parties. H.E. Annette Lu, Vice President of Taiwan, delivered her keynote speech.

The program, emceed by Dr. S. Vijayaratnam, former Senator from the Malaysian People’s Movement Party and Ms. Wu Szu-Yao of the Democratic Progressive Party,  also featured Cambodian legislator and CALD Executive Committee member, Ms. Saumura Tioulong, MP, who gave the welcome address  in behalf of CALD.

Famous Taiwanese cultural performers provided the intermission numbers during the course of the lauriat dinner hosted by DPP and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy. These include the nationally renowned Children’s School from Samchong District,  Taiwan aboriginal singer Chiang Ching-Shing and aboriginal dancers from the Amis tribe.

Attending the assembly were all full members of CALD: Democrat Party of Thailand, Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, Liberal Party of the Philippines, People’s Movement Party of Malaysia (Gerakan), Singapore Democratic Party, Liberal Party of Sri Lanka, the National Council of the Union of Burma and the Sam Rainsy Party of Cambodia. Also attending were CALD associate members Liberal Forum of Pakistan, the Young Liberals & Democrats of Asia and observers Uri Party of Korea, National Awakening Party (PKB) of Indonesia, Indonesian Party of Struggle (PDIP), Democrat Party of Japan, and the Democrat Party of Hong Kong. Liberal International also participated in the general assembly. CALD is a cooperating member of LI.

The CALD General Assembly is hosted by the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan and is supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.
