CALD Executive Director visits KL

(July 28, Kuala Lumpur) Mr. John Joseph S. Coronel, the Executive Director of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD) finished today his three-day visit to the Malaysian capital in preparation for the 3rd CALD Communication Workshop.The said workshop will be held in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya from September 17 to 21. Focusing on the theme “Political Parties and the Internet”, this activity is hosted by the Malaysian People’s Movement Party (Parti Gerakan Rakyat), a founding member of CALD and is supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.

Mr. Coronel took the opportunity to attend a parliamentary session and then met with various party officials in the senate including Senators Dr. Vijayaratnam Seevaratnam (Gerakan Vice President for International Affairs), Dr. Rhina Baar and Dr. Chin Fook Weng. After attending the session, Mr. Coronel joined the lunch hosted by the party which was attended by the three abovementioned senators and other senior party officials including Deputy Minister for Internal Security Chia Kwang Chye, MP (Gerakan Secretary General); Deputy Minister for International Trade and Industry, Mah Siew Keong;  and, Parliamentary Secretaries Messrs. Ng Lip Yong and YB Kah Choon.

To prepare for the educational tour of the workshop participants to the famed Multimedia Super Corridor in Cyberjaya, Senator Vijayaratnam, a member of the CALD Executive Committee, Mr. Gooi Hoe Hin, Political Secretary to the Minister of Energy, Water and Communication and Mr. Coronel paid a courtesy visit to the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC).

Dato Narayanan Kanan, MDC Senior Vice President welcomed the delegation while Dr. Amirudin Abdul Wahad, MDC Manager, gave a presentation on the facilities of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC). Mr. Coronel gave a presentation of CALD and a brief summary of the communications workshop. During the visit, a video presentation of the MSC was shown followed by a tour of some of the facilities including a virtual reality demonstration.

Mr. Coronel also visited the Gerakan Headquarters as the workshop will include part of the tour of the headquarters followed by a dinner hosted by Gerakan. In the party office, he met with Ms. Huih Yeam of the PGRM Department of International Affairs. Ms. Yeam was one of the CALD interns to the European Parliament in Brussels and Strasbourg for this year.

Mr. Coronel also met one of the speakers of the workshop, Mr. Premesh Chandran, chief executive officer of Malaysiakini.

In a separate occasion, Mr. Coronel also took the opportunity of meeting with Ms. Laura Thornton, Senior Program Manager of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) who was also in Kuala Lumpur on another project. The Washington DC-based organization  is a partner of CALD.
