CALD Sec Gen elected as Liberal International Vice President

(May 13, 2005/ Sofia, Bulgaria) Ms. Bi-Khim Hsiao, MP, Secretary General of the Council of Asian Liberals & Democrats (CALD), was elected as Vice President of Liberal International during the 53rd Liberal International Congress in this Eastern European city. Ms. Hsiao also served as LI Treasurer prior to her election.

The London-based Liberal International is the world federation of liberal political parties. Founded in 1947 it has become a pre-eminent network for liberal parties and for the strengthening of liberal democracy around the world. It counts more than 80 liberal political parties among its members.  CALD is a cooperating organisation of LI and three of CALD’s members are LI members; namely, the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan and the Liberal Parties of the Philippines and Sri Lanka.Liberal Democrat Party’s John Lord Alderdice, Member of the British House of Lords and former Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, has been elected President of Liberal International, replacing Flemish Liberal Party’s Madam Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck, Member of the European Parliament and Belgian Minister of State. Like his predecessor,  Lord Alderdice has attended several CALD activities.
