‘Hold Another UN Women Conference’, Asian Women Leaders Demand

“The United Nations (UN) should consider holding the Fifth World Conference on Women – it has been long overdue.”  This was one of the calls of hundreds of women who assembled in Taipei, Taiwan on 11-12 August 2017 for an international conference with the theme “Women Empowering Women: Experiences Across Asia” organized by the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD), a regional network of liberal and democratic political parties in Asia.

In a resolution passed during its recent international conference in Taiwan, the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) reiterated its call to stop extra-judicial killings that tainted the Philippines’ war against illegal drugs. The call coincided with the intensified campaign of the authorities which claimed the lives of at least 60 people in the past 3 days.

As you read this, one of us, Joshua Wong, has been locked away by the Hong Kong government. Along with two other young Umbrella Movement leaders, Nathan Law and Alex Chow, he has been sentenced to prison for leading peaceful demonstrations in 2014. This marks the height of the Hong Kong government’s persecution of young dissidents who bravely stood up against authoritarianism and is a direct hit on this generation’s ideal of a fair, democratic and just society.
